Nothing can outshine a good story. Nothing.
Look, I'm not trying to be dramatic; we Homo sapiens organize ourselves around stories. It might sound controversial, but even the largest forms of organization -like religions- start with stories. The apple of Adam and Eve, the story of Moses parting the sea with his staff, and Steve Jobs' garage tale are not so different from each other.
Stories are everywhere: in fashion, music, cinema, and theater. They are present in commerce, governments, and cultures.
My story began in 1986, in an interesting union called Yugoslavia. It grew in Macedonia and eventually took root in Turkey. In "30 Pages" (a book where I answer four questions about marketing), I explained the importance of storytelling and the beginning of my marketing story as follows:
"Years later, when my path crossed with marketing, driven by my curiosity and admiration for it, I would recall this: Marketing is another name for dancing with stories. It doesn't matter what you believe is right. What matters is having a strong story that can convince others of your truth."
Since the day I entered the workforce immediately after graduating in 2009, I've traveled to dozens of countries. Over a 10-year period, I managed $120 million in export revenue. And the most important thing I learned was this: nothing can replace a good story.
Marketing exists to move people, make them visible, and create intent. None of these can happen without a solid story to justify them. Christmas is a story, and the motivation it creates to purchase is its justification. Thanksgiving, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, and birthdays. That necklace worn by the pop star you admire. Cristiano Ronaldo's watch.
If you're here today, seeking to build a story, welcome. We can help you.
